Curious about Seahorses

Hello everyone. I am new to Reef Central. Was referred here by some people at MemFish as well as a coworker of mine at Hollywood Feed.

I am looking into possibly transitioning from my current set up of a chiclid tank to a seahorse tank. From what some people have told me, my tank is pretty ideal for it (44ish gallon tall hexagon tank). Been doing some research now for about 3 days or so just to get an idea of what to expect. From what I gathered it doesn't seem too too difficult but what do I know.. I could be soooo wrong. So if anyone here has any knowledge, info, and anything else they would like to share Iwould greatly appreciate it!

Your tank is pretty well suited for a seahorse tank. Because of the small amount of surface space at the top you should have an open airline tube to make big bubbles to help with gas exchange.
Seahorses are not hard if their needs are met but they do require diligent husbandry and maintenance, more so than reef tanks. The reason is they are very susceptible to bacterial infections. Test kits do not show bacteria so a seahorse keeper just needs to be diligent about water changes, siphoning sand or bare bottom, wiping down the tank and cleaning filters. Also keeping the temperature below 74 degrees helps inhibit bacteria growth. An oversized protein skimmer is very helpful with seahorses as well.

Also the appropriately named seahorse.org, in particular, you will really love their compatibility chart for tankmates, yes, even including good/bad corals.

Good luck!
