new camera = better pics

The wife and some family members pitched in and got me a new camera for x-mas, its a Cannon powershot SD790 IS
(thank you all!)
So this is still a point and shoot, but there are lots of settings to play with the color, which can make some colors on the corals misleading, so I tried to capture the natural color I see when I look at the corals, the first two pics of the same coral will show you what im talking about, small setting changes can make drastic difference in color.

Wow, that scoly seems to have adapted well. Also cant believe the growth on your Christmas favia. Your tank has sure come a long way. Very nice.

Beautiful Brian, good job!

cubsare1 01/07/2009 06:32 PM

I just ordered the cannon sd1100 2 minutes before logging onto this site. I hope it takes as good of pictures as your new camera does.
Your tank looks awesome !

andygb54303 01/07/2009 06:36 PM

Awesome pics. Please tell us your technique for getting such good macro shots.

soyadrink 01/07/2009 06:39 PM

Love your tank and the pictures! The GPS really looks good on the sandbed like that

johnanddawn 01/07/2009 06:56 PM

nice - pics and husbandry - your corals/tank really looks nice and healthy

and the actinic shot is really nice - i still can't take a desent actinic pic

Bri Guy 01/07/2009 07:07 PM

I always struggled getting the true color of the corals to show up on the pics, especially the actinics too.

Im no photographer, so I don't even really know what I was doing, I just play with the settings and see how the pic turns out, I probably took 200 to get the 20 nice shots you see. And my friend Mike took some and showed a few things it does. But then again this camera is new to me, once I get it down I won't waste as much film.

thankx for the complements everybody.

kass03 01/07/2009 10:16 PM

Wow very nice Bri! the picts and your tank.
I HAVE to have some of those pink spekled zoa's.

I have that superman shroom. I got mine from cherry corals and the pict looked like yours but my shroom is'nt as red.

Very nice! I guess we can expect nothing but high quality pics from you from now on. Your tank looks even cleaner than mine. Good job!

gbcichlids 01/08/2009 01:47 PM

Very nice, Bri. Tank looks great!

msch1999 01/08/2009 04:33 PM

Nice pics Bri. Makes me want to learn the ins and out of my camera even more now.

Bri Guy 01/08/2009 10:57 PM

Thank you all very much, it means a lot to me.

Pike614 01/09/2009 12:02 AM

Great pics! I have the A710 IS, and bought an underwater housing for it to get some close-ups. Were yours taken with a housing, or a light box, or just through the glass?

Bri Guy 01/09/2009 12:29 AM

Some through the glass, and some are top down shots, but no housing (they want like $150 just for the water proof case!)

Tripod for the shots I could.

Pike614 01/09/2009 07:24 AM

Yeah, the case was $250, but I used it scuba diving too, and needed something rated to 100'+. It makes the colors pop even brighter not having to deal with the glass or surface...it is hard to tell with yours though!! Great pics for through the glass and top down!

FlipFlops24/7 01/09/2009 08:05 AM

the underwater housing for my camera costs over 2 grand :-(

Anyone here using the Olympus 1030SW? I heard those take pretty decent underwater pics and are under $300 now

Pike614 01/09/2009 08:41 AM

ouch, I bet it is a lot fancier than mine though...pics turned OK, it is fairly basic, and pics had a blue hue when below about 30'. Works like a charm for the tank though!
