help and sugestions with over flow
I picked up an acrylic tank and would like to make an over flow.its not reef ready and i dont want the hang on type. Any suggestions?thanks

I've been very happy with my beananimal style overflow so far. Very quiet and trustworthy. You'd have to drill the tank and be a little creative to make your own overflow box though. Search the forums for the long thread regarding this overflow.

I like that idea, any thoughts on making the over flow box? Is it truly necessary? Could you put some sort off screen over the ends of the 90's to prevent anything from getting in? Thanks

You would be better off with an overflow box. Screens clog, an overflow box helps skimm off the oils that gater on the water surface. Working with acrylic is very easy if you've done any woodworking in the past if you want to build your own. You could also look in your local RC forum to find a local builder to make you one.

Thanks, didnt think about the skimming/oils and things. I have some wood work experance, do you just glue or silicone the box to gether?
|
You don't give the size of your tank. If you can do a coast to coast it only takes 2 pieces of acrylic glued with weldon.
|
To glue the box together use Weld-On #4 solvent (it has the constancy of water). Get the needle applicator tool to apply it. You could also use Weld-on #16 solvent which is much thicker (like tooth paste) but does not make quite as good of a connection. You can either use aquarium safe silicone or the #4 solvent to attach the overflow to your tank. The #4 solvent makes a superior permanent attachment. Table saws, routers, most any of your wood working tools will cut and mold acrylic.

Thanks, for the input. My tank is a 40g and is an odd shape, its flat in the back but kinda comes to a point on each end. I'll try and get pic up this evening.
