galaxea coral
sorry if this is posted in the wrong place...i'm not really sure what ype of coral galaxea is!
anyway, the lfs guy told me that galaxea was a good, hardy coral for my tank so i bought one.I love it, the glowing tips combined with its constant movement makes it rather hypnotic. i have some questions though: 1.this coral apparently stings. can it sting fish? 2.will it kill mushrooms, because it seems shrooms are immune to a lot of other stingy coral. 3. what is the average growth rate for these? my frag has 5 pillars(don't know what to call them!) and each have a few babies growing at the bases. 4.will they benefit from an occasional feeding? thank you for all the information! |
Galaxea are considered LPS. They do sting other corals (including corallimorpharians) and need to be placed with enough space between it and the next sessile invertebrate because they can use sweeper tentacles to sting them (see picture here: http://www.meerwasser-lexikon.de/img...2CbkkhWBuz.jpg ).
They will not sting fish in my experience. |
I have had one for several years now. They are very hardy corals, but do have some serious sweeper tentacles. They will eat mysis if placed carefully on their polyps. To avoid him from stinging anyone else, I place it near the end of the tank, with no corals downstream. That way the sweepers dont hit any other corals. I would say they grow at a moderate rate, nothing spectacular, but steady.

so, iknow they'll sting the coral, but will it HURT the shrooms? like for example, gsp will bother all corals Except for mushrooms don't care and will happily grow right on top of them.
that's whati really want to know. maybe i will strategically place coral rubble around it in such a way to keep it's sweepers from hitting them. i'm really glad they won't hurtfish because i was woried my little clown goby would sit on it! thankyou so much! |
just to report back... this is my very favorite coral so far! I loooove it. It has never given me any issues and is super easy to care for. it is growing super fast. each of the original 5 heads now has a ring of at least 6 babies around their base. that's about 30 new heads in like2 months! it looks so fluffy and full! I don't feed it very often, but when i do it eats readily and is easy to feed. I'm starting to see the occasional sweeper now, but they are always under 2 inches and i have them pkaced so the current aims the tentacles away from all other corals.
I love my galaxea...tis the best :bounce2: |
