Best Mode for MP40's

I just got 2 MP40's for my 6ft 180g mixed reef and was wondering what you guys recommend as far as placement and modes, maybe you could share a picture of your schedule. I have them connected through reeflink.

I run my mp10's(same thing just smaller) in reefcrest mode in anti-sync during the day, and lagoon at night, again in anti-sync. I do run them in nutrient export mode for 15 minutes after I feed the fish. Apex handles all of this with a push of a button(shuts pumps off during feedings, then 5 minutes later it kicks them into nutrient export mode, then back to reefcrest).

I have a 180 with 4 mp40s. One each side and 2 on back. I run one side reefcrest and other side constant. The backs run lagoon. I then switch sided every 6 hrs. Total random flow.

Do you have them in opposite sides of the tank? How for away from the top or bottom?

You should put them on both ends, probably just a little above the middle of the tank. Adjust from there based on your flow needs.

FullBoreReefer 12/30/2016 06:22 AM

I have two, one on each side panel, both 60% in reefcrest. When my auto feeder kicks on they are programmed to lagoon mode and lowest flow for 30mins then back to reef crest. Then from 10:00-10:30pm they both go into nutrient transport at 90%, then back to reef crest overnight.

Yes opposite side of the tank. One about mid tank, and the other down low so it blows across the sandbed. I also have 2 jebao pp-8's on the back glass blowing forward.

I have a single MP40 on my 4' tank and I have to say that the program I am most impressed with so far is Nutrient Transport Mode. I feel like the name does it an injustice because it makes it sound like it's a special, maintenance-only mode but it isn't. It does an incredible job creating both a volume and variation of flow. And it does, in fact, do exactly as it says in terms of keeping particles suspended so they can either be eaten by filter feeders or sent to the overflow.

Once I get a second Vortech to compliment this one I am going to experiment with Reef Crest and Lagoon modes again. Unfortunately with a single one they seem to create rather laminar flow. But if you have two, you'll get incredible sway!

What percentages do you do for the different modes?

How do you like the PP8's? If money wasnt an issue would you do MP10's on the back glass instead?

What do you use to control them?

All my rockwork is on the back 65% of the tank, should I put them in the middle blowing towards the rock or closer to the front so it flows sorta freely?

If they blow full blast directly at SPS coral it is hard for the cleanup crew and herbivores to keep it clean. They'll pick a less turbulent area to graze. And full blast can dislodge the polyps from LPS.

Arrange back or sides until you observe the flow you want.

I run mine brought my apex and they cycle through all the modes at different intensity.

I don't think 30 minutes is even close to the time needed to go through 1 cycle in NTM. I believe each full cycles spans a few hours... No real point in running it for 30 minutes.

My apex and wxm module

A full cycle? 30mins at 90% moves quite a bit of water. It's enough to stir things up for me...

Each side and I like using the Reef Crest Mode.

Yeah there's an entire cycle to it, look at the chart that Ecotech puts in all of their literature. It's certainly not bad to run it for 30 minutes, I'm just letting you know that it requires more than that to see the full effect of it.

Reefcrest seems most popular for our reefs, what I use, I prefer not sinc'd, same speed/mode 24/7

roli112 01/02/2017 02:35 PM

Thanks for all the great suggestions. Does anyone have a screenshot of their schedule?

ksicard 01/02/2017 03:37 PM

Nutrient Transport Mode is my favorite.

If I could afford them, I would do 2 mp40's on the side glass, and 2 mp10's on the back.

The PP8's I absolutely love them. The control ability with an apex far outweighs the control ability of the ecotech products. I can program any way I see fit(standard always on flow, start and stop for random flow) with the MP line you are stuck to the preset flow patterns ecotech deemed sufficient.

All said, I would switch to mp40's if money wasn't an issue. They are just easier to clean, and far more reliable then jebaos. I also like how the motor part is outside the tank decreasing unneeded heat in the water.

Your right, I turned on my "clean tank" switch via Apex manually, and let it run for 2hrs. I thought the initial "back and forth" was it, I now stand corrected. I've had them for so long I never really looked into it. Although it stirred up a lot of crap, I now see how the wave changes would be different than just the back and forth motion.

One more question... Do you guys use the sponges on the pumps?
