Pga's "Simple" 18 gallon Frag Tank

I've had this frag tank running for almost a year now but was always lazy to post about it. The tank dimensions and it's simplistic utilization of equipment was inspired by fellow RC member (Watchguy123). Mark gave me various pointers along the way, but the idea behind the frag tank is that it is skimmer-less and lacks any live rock.

What????

Here are the specs:

Tank: 24x24x10 Visio glass tank
Skimmer: What skimmer?
Sump: What sump?
Controller: What controller?
Flow: Gutted Aquaclear 20, 1 Tunze Modded Nanostream
Doser: Cheap Jeabo
Doser Containers: VOSS water bottle
Lighting: Cheapest china box on ebay with the nobs for intensity.
Bio Filteration: 1 8x8x4 Marine Pure Block

The lights are modded by changing out 2 red and 2 green diodes with UV diodes. All lenses were removed for better spread. The only real filtration is via the Marine Pure block you see inside the tank. There is no live rock. Other than corals, there is a sixline wrasse and a bunch of snails. This setup really showed me that reefing, even with high end sps corals does not necessary mean high dollar equipment.

Nice and simple. How is your maintenance routine and how often do you feed the 6 line

LesPaulPlayer 01/12/2018 03:12 PM

Very nice. What intensity do you run each channel on the black box?

solitude127 01/12/2018 03:37 PM

K.I.S.S. I like it. How to provide nutrients for the corals? also, what type of lighting is your DT again?

Red_Blenny 01/12/2018 03:54 PM

Did you built your own stand? Looks pretty sweet.

Nice. I like it. So simple.

Planning on doing something similar. Except with a lagoon 25 and use a reptile rack as the stand. Hopefully i actually make it happen

Thank you. I do weekly 5 gallon water changes and fees the wrasse at least twice a day.

Being one of the cheapest version of a china black box, the nobs are not labeled. I would guess 40 on whites and 75 on blues.

Hi all!

Newbie here. Can someone answer this for me, please. :) I'm supposed to post this a new entry but it seems i'm not allowed 'cause I can't find the option where to do that.

Anyway, here is my question:
i have a 90 gallon tank that my fish maintenance guy says looks suspect. he says the silicone job doesn't look that great. but he also said that i should never use a used tank i purchased from someone else. always buy new. i've bought this tank used, and i've filled it with water it has had no leaks. should i be super worried, or should i trust a used tank if it still holds water.

Also, should used tanks be stored with water in them? that's what he is telling me to keep the seals from drying out. I've never heard that before. is that true?

if a tank fails, is it usually a slow leak or does it break and gush everywhere?

Hope someone answers me. Thanks!

Love the aluminum T-Bar stand!!

dodgerblew 01/12/2018 07:08 PM

I agree, simple and sweet. I do want to correct you on your total volume Tri. 24x24x10 is 25 gallons

rorroreef 01/12/2018 07:50 PM

Only an obsessed reef geek would spend all that money on equipment and electricity to hold 6 frags....Hahahahaa.....oh and btw, I mean that as a compliment tri : p

You got me there Rik. Thanks for the correction. I've been using the tank's actual volume for calculating things like dosing and mixed the two up. Being a rimmed tank I leave about 2 inches of the tank unfilled. That along with the gigantic Marine Pure block puts me at 18-19 gallons of actual volume.

That sounds like a good plan. An AIO design likebthe lagoon should make things more straight forward.

Glad you like it. You can find everything here. Just dont expect it to be cheap. I just like the look, as it fits my office decor.

Thank you tons. I am the same way, I’d rather pay a little more and have it look the way I want
