Fluval Edge 6g

Hey everyone, I have a relatively new 6g Fluval edge tank. I plan on making this a mixed reef. For lighting, I’ll have the Kessil A150 Ocean Blue LED to replace the stock lighting of 5W of 21 LEDs (18 white leds (7600k) and 3 blue leds) I . I use IO reef crystals salt too.
I have about 6-10lbs of rock and abt 1” of crushed coral for substrate.
2 ocellaris clownfish (pretty sure they’ve paired up!)
There is a power filter that comes with the tank and is rated at 100gph.

I don’t have the most recent pics of my tank, but these are fairly recent.

I do have a couple questions for everyone:
1. What does everyone recommend for added flow?
2. How often should I perform water changes and how much?

P.S. I wasn’t able to upload pics because it kept “failing” to upload...

Hi Chris. I have zero suggestions on the tank, as I've only just recently downsized myself, to a 32gal.
However!!!! I have learned you have to drop the heck out of your picture until it gets accepted. I'm new, so there's probably a better way or answer for that. Ha.

I wonder if I use my laptop whether that would make a difference for uploading pics. This is my smallest reef tank, so I just wanted more tips on husbandry.

Ask away to the pros out there. I'm listening too!

The easiest for me to get pictures the right size is to take them via messenger and then save them. You can upload and for some mysterious reason they are the proper size lol

Ok I’ll try that!

I have the fluval spec 5 gallon reef tank with 2 clowns and corals including 2 nems. I have the Jebao SW2 at a lower setting. I do 75% wc every 2 weeks. I dose calc and alk in between WCs. Been doing this for several years. Works for me.

How long have you had the Jebao?
For comparison, I change 1g 1-2x/week which is abt 20-40% weekly.

I've had the SW2 for 14 months now. Still working great. I also had the original pump upgraded long ago. I wanted more movement for my BTAs so I got the SW2.

What pump did you have before?

BeachVacationer 07/23/2018 06:36 AM

Upgraded the stock return pump as that wasn't providing enough flow. As my nems got bigger, I needed more flow so I added the SW2.

I’ve had a nem before for quite some time, but I’m kinda scared to put one in a nano...
I’m not sure I want to add additional flow. For now, I’ve decided to make this a softy and LPS tank.
How do you like the SW2’s controller?

BeachVacationer 07/23/2018 09:29 AM

SW2 controller was inexpensive and the motor is very quiet. I have no complaints. I don't change the wavemaker setting because my nems are happy and haven't moved in 2 years.

With that style tank I worry about heat build up with additional motor in the tank and reduced O2 in the column with a very small surface area.

The opening is very small- maybe around 5x7”, so I can also see how heat can build up quickly. As far as oxygenation, the power filter helps. It splashes into the tank, so it helps dissipate heat and oxygenate the water simultaneously.
I really want the tunze nanostream 6015 when dfs has their sale, but they sold out so quickly!

BeachVacationer 07/23/2018 06:41 PM

With the upgraded light, how warm is the tank? From what I've read that Tunze is not a wavemaker, ie no controller for making wave patterns. I think it's too much for a 6 gallon tank. I have a temp. controller connected to my heater and a fan which keeps my temp at 77 +/- 0.3 degrees. I think in such a small tank you need to keep everything as constant as possible.

reef_of_flames 07/23/2018 07:28 PM

The lights are leds, and The total wattage 5 W.
The Tunze Was just for added flow. You are right and that it’s not a wait for maker, but rather a circulation pump.

BeachVacationer 07/23/2018 07:41 PM

Oh, I thought you had the Kessil? 5 watt LED won't sustain anything. I have about 30 watts which seems to be adequate for my BTAs, torch, brain, Sinularia, GSP, and mushrooms.

I should be getting the Kessil this weekend. That I believe is 30W, and will be raised I’m guessing around 12” of the water surface. So there should be little to no heat from that too.

Sounds good. My last advice to you is give as much room to the clowns as you. can. You know that tank is really too small for them. I got mine when they were really small. Although mine are like 4 years old, they are stunted and are way smaller than they should be. They are healthy as far as I can tell but very small for their age bring in such a small tank. Is that cruel? Perhaps. I'm thinking of getting a bigger tank for my nems, not really for my clowns's benefit. Just wanted to say leave as must room for your clowns as possible. I have minimal live rock in the tank but a good amount of bio ceramics in the filter section.
