the Tunze line would be fine for his application but keep in mind that ime you can have a skimmer that is improperly sized for a given system. The neck size, turnover, dwell time,feeding and nutrient levels are all in play when deciding which skimmer will work for you. If you have a skimmer with too big of a neck, high turnover and a system with low to moderate nutrient levels, you most likely will never build enough foam head to keep the skimmer pulling consistently. It would pull a lot initially but then will fizzle out to near nothing until nutrient levels build up again. That would not be ideal because you would want the skimmer to pull consistently.

So in my opinion "yes" you can have too much skimmer.

Again, this is only my .02 and your mileage may vary
