Exclamation Looking for some feedback on 180g tank

Looking to get this tank from someone local in my area. I am moving and figured I should upgrade from 48"x24"x24" to 72"x24"x24"

It is a Sea Clear 180 gallon tank that comes with the stand. I asked what the thickness of the acrylic was. When I looked it up online, it says 3/8"

http://www.fishtanksdirect.com/seacl...fish-tank.aspx

When he sent me a picture of the measurement, it looks less than 3/8". Is this ok?

I can buff out the scratches. How does it look?

It's going to be a pain in the butt to deal with those tiny top holes. Cleaning the panels is going to hurt physically. I wouldn't pay too much for it for that reason

My father in law works in acrylics manufacturing so I can probably cut the top any way I want it. I also want an external C2C overflow, so maybe we'll glue one on.

I was just wondering if that thickness for the acrylic in the measuring tape picture is safe and reliable for this big of a tank

That looks like 5/16". I had recently purchased a 120g 60"long acrylic tank, used. Feedback from this forum convinced me to buy a new tank. The member Acrylics stated 5/16" is too thin. I also spent 2 days with Novus trying to polish the tanks scratches out. It was alot of work and didn't work as well as I thought it would. There was improvment and more labor would get tbe job done. No matter the amount of work I put into it I didn't feel fully comforyable with 5/16 acrylic over 60" span showing a 1/2" of flex or bow.

Would it still flex/bow with the top piece?

That eurobracing is structural and I wouldn't cut it without worrying that the long sides will now

Its a real good deal for stand and tank. But I dont want it to fail down the road. What would fail on it?

I probably wont cut the top open more, but might add an external overflow to the back. That would help strengthen it right?

How much is this tank? Honestly, it's seen better days.

for reference I bought a craigslist 180 tank same dimensions as this one but in much better condition, with thicker acrylic and internal overflow plus a much nicer stand for $750.

Looking at the pictures I wouldn't even bother going to look at this tank unless the advertised price was less than $500, with the goal of talking the seller down to $350-$400.

SeaClear is a good brand name, it obviously held water before, and acrylic generally does not leak as readily as glass does. I think you will be fine so long as you don't compromise the structural integrity by cutting too much off the top.
