Help please
Hey there
I have a new saltwater aquarium that's been running for about 6 weeks. Just wondering if this is normal? And what I should do? Thankyou |

That is algae. Its normal in the cycling process.

We have a clownfish as of yesterday.
Do you know how long it takes for it to go away? Some say a week, and others say it might take months. Thankyou for your reply 😀 |

I wish more people had Nielsen and Fossa's "The Modern COral Reef" Vol 1. It has a chapter showing the various algae cycles during the first 8 - 12 months while an aquarium matures. What you are seeing is to be expected. The only thing I would do is manual removal. Here's some videos I think you might find informative or helpful:

Your rock and sand (and water (if you didn't set up with ro/di water) ) can bring in phosphate, which is fertilizer for algae, which can start from spores on rock, or in water, or, I'm convinced, even in the air---I used to live on lake, and I swore it was the case. Every tank tends to get it and to get rid of it, you have to get it out of the water: use ro/di only. Use GFO (Phosban and other brands) and use a lot of patience. Forget getting anything to eat it: the poo dissolves and breaks down and your phosphate is right there---again. Has to be removed and kept out.
