transfering tanks

I've had my 50 gallon tank for about a year now and still consider myself new to the hobby cause I keep very little in it at the moment ( 2 percula, yellow tang, diamond watchman goby, and purple fire fish, very few corals. ) Everything in my tank is fine. I am planning on transferring to a 110 gallon someone is giving me. This 110 is set up and has a horrible green hair algae problem.. Its all over the sand and live rock. Question is should I completely empty out this tank before trying to transfer and start over new. Or should I just try and use what they have..i.e. rock and sand.

I would start fresh myself. I don't like fixing other peoples problems. You could probably salvage the rock by boiling but I would toss the sand.

I would clean the LR and get new sand, seed it with sand from your 50g. Also I would use as much of the water as you can from your 50g.

Oh and when you seed your sand I would only use the top inch or so.
