Skimmer for a Large Tank

I bought a custom tank from miracles. I plan on it being a FOWLR, at least at the beginning. Any suggestions on a skimmer?

I was planning on a Diablo 220 INT or maybe a Nyos 220. I would prefer an internal skimmer but any suggestions are welcome.

If you want sound advice, I would suggest you share your display volume since it's impossible to properly recommend a skimmer without that kind of info.

I really like my Simplicity skimmer and it didn't break the bank.

Since it's going to be fish only are you going to have any dirty eaters? How big is the display. Total volume isn't as important in this regard.

Do you plan on a light bioload or a heavy one?

FWIW, in a 300 gallon tank, 150 inches worth of fish is a heavy bioload. Most people who assume they have a heavy load don't actually have a heavy load.

Do you have a budget? Either of the first 2 you mentioned would likely perform OK on that size display with a moderate to heavy load. I'd lean towards the Nyos but I am not a fan of skimmers with pumps built into the body unless the sump space is limited. Having the pump built into the body makes routine pump maintenance more difficult. Obviously there are higher quality skimmers out that but as I said, either of those two would work. How long the pumps will last is a different question. Another very good option that is very reasonably priced would be the Life Reef SVS3-30 IN-SUMP paired with a good pump.

About $700 for the skimmer. I also plan on getting the next cleaner and skimmate collection jar, which reef octopus makes and I don't have to do anything.

I would prefer something I don't have to fiddle with and I read nyos are really sensitive. I have a reef octopus on my 75 reef which has worked for years and is a set it and forget it type of skimmer.

On my old 300 I ran external, I had the real estate under the tank. I ran Reef Octopus both times, a Super reef 5000 and then an XP 5000, only difference was cone body. They both had bubble blaster pumps and really were set it and forget it, I just teed off my return pump to feed them.

If you want internal you could run the Elite 220 and its a dc pump with a good warranty.

I have never run one of the Nyos yet but hear good things.
