Egg shells for calcium

Hello, was at a local reefers house tonight and he has a beauty 33 gallon reef. He cracks a dozen eggs and has a family omelette once a month and keeps the shells in an aquaclear filter. Swears that his calcium stays at 440ppm.because of it. Been doing it for almost 2 years.

He said he does not dose for calcium at all. I was surprised to say the least. He told me he's due to crack another dozen on the weekend and replace the shells. He had some lps and a few sps in his tank and it looked great. Is this the reason why I wonder? Any input? Please respond. Thanks

The egg shells would have to be dissolving to add anything to the tank. A 33 gallon could have stable calcium with just water changes imo. I doubt the eggs are doing anything. Egg shells do contain calcium carbonate though.

I wish! I eat 3 eggs per day and they're the local ungraded yard eggs. Darn things cost me $6/dozen!

I dont know, you'd have to be dissolving the calcium and that doesn't really happen until you have a really low PH (6.5-7) like in a reactor

That being said maybe there's something else going on here but that's my take

How would you clean the shells? I would think residual egg whites would could be a disaster.

My absolute first thought. Dosing calcium would be way safer than a tank crash
