clown fish
11/24/2013 I got my first fish, percula pair.
That day, I put them right in my D.T. because they looked healthy. after a few days of feeding them mysis shrimp (frozen) they started to poop white. I put them in the Q.T. 11/29/2013 and made a post. I was told that there is nothing wrong with them, they excrete white poop because of the mysis. some said it was internal parasite. 12/22/2013 Today, they still show nothing of any external illness/diseases. No symptoms at all. But they still poop white. I don't want to medicate them because they show no signs of sure illness. therefore, I don't know exactly what to medicate them with. Like I said, some said it is the mysis because they had the same issue, and it is not a real problem at all. some said internal parasite. But, I'm starting to think that...if it was a parasite internally, I'm sure they would have progressively become more sick and more stressed over this Q.T. period. But they have not, and still eat the mysis, and still very active. So, can someone tell me if I should be okay adding them to my Display again? I want to get a better light so I can get my first coral. and would a skunk cleaner shrimp be a good addition to my tank? I like them, but what are they good for? any help is welcome! thanks! ![]() |

all fish should be put in a qt for at least 4 weeks longer if suspect illness try changing there
diet to see if it changes color white is some times a internal parasite. as far as the cleaner shrimp if you plan on having lps corals they can be a real pain in the a-- stealing the food . they are cool to watch when clean the fish my puffer loves it some time the shrimp rides around on its back

And thanks for the cleaner shrimp tip ![]() I have no clue how far I'm coming with this 20 gallon long in terms of corals...but fish and other inverts...I'm gonna try to stick to it. as it does calm me down a lot. can be expensive if you are just starting, or completely destroy your tank. But I'm being very patient on this...I thought it would be hard to be like this. but I keep in there for when I want to spend my time with it. Thank you a lot for your time to reply man ![]() very appreciated |

and I am sticking to weekly maintenance even though I only have 2 snails in the D.T.
and my 2 fish in the Q.T. I attend to on a daily basis. Any tips for good lighting for just soft corals? don't want to get into sps/lps for awhile until I understand the easy corals. oh, and any other fish/inverts you think would be cool for a 20 gallon long? I don't want to go over the roof. like I said, it's been a month with these clown fish. So that shows I'm in no hurry ![]() Thanks again, man! |

If not, you can treat the tank with PraziPro. It happens to be the only reef safe medication and works well.

My first coral was a Purple Aussie Hammer coral and it's doing just fine. Aside from being bleached like all my other corals, but that's a different story.
Something like a Hammer, Torch, or Frogspawn coral would be a great first coral. Depending on your tastes, you might want to look at Zoanthids too. They are very easy to keep. |

In terms of lighting...here is what I am looking at.... http://www.drsfostersmith.com/produc...3&pcatid=23753 My tank is a 20 gallon long, as said a few times in this thread.. should I go for the 30" marine fixture? or something a bit smaller like a 24"?...to create softer light spots in the tank. |

I used to have an AquaticLife fixture and really liked it, except for the fact that the fans can be a little noisy. I ended up replacing the ones included with the fixture for some I bought off NewEgg.
Anyway, are you planning on hanging the fixture or sitting it on top of the tank? |

I love NewEgg.
![]() If you're using the legs, you'll need to get the fixture that is the same length as your tank. Do you know the dimensions of your tank? It says online that it should be 30 1/4", so you'll need to go with the 30" fixture. Have you considered a 4 bulb system? I'm not sure if a 2 bulb system would be sufficient, but I guess it depends on if you want SPS or not. I'm not a lighting expert, so hopefully someone can chime in on that question. |

![]() So, only few fish...probably 2 more at the most. I wanna make this a coral dominant tank because there isn't much hiding places for many fish. Fish I plan on keeping in this tank are probably around the few that stay small..2 I could name off, firefish and gobby. inverts I hope I can keep at some time in this 20 gallon long are.. a star, shrimp, hermits (not too many), and variety of small snails, and sticking to 1-2 turbo snails as they do get big. and only soft corals for a good while. (mushrooms, and the few that you listed I may look into.) |

so, in your opinion...I should get this lighting for my tank? I have a metal open stand so I am gonna have to figure out a cool way to put the power strips for everything, I hate just having one placed on the ground. I wanna make it look a bit organized. and then have the light on it's own single timer. |

You're very welcome.
![]() Depending on your budget, I would step up to one of the fixtures with the built in timer and moon LEDs. The timer is going to save you a lot of aggravation and the moon LEDs make things look great at night. Are you planning on keeping any SPS? |

Well, do you know a light fixture that would have the moon lighting/build in timer? If not, then I can just get the aqualife fixture 30" model. and put that on a timer. and get a separate led moon light and put that on a timer, too. |

Going to a 4 bulb configuration with the moon LEDs and a built in controller adds a chunk of change to the price. I'm not sure on your budget but here is the same thing I used to have, but sized for your tank.
AquaticLife 4 Bulb T5 HO Fixture You probably don't need a 4 bulb though if you don't ever plan on wanting SPS corals, although coral can be an addiction and you don't want to buy things twice. This is all provided you don't want to go LEDs, which is a totally different conversation. ![]() |

Since I am pretty new, and with only a 20L, IMHO, soft corals is where I plan on staying. I probably will get a bigger tank in the future when I have the space. Then sps would come into question ![]() So could I just use my light I want to get, time that. and then some how find lunar lights? cause I agree, moon lighting in my dark room would be pretty cool. ![]() ![]() |

![]() There are a bunch of places that sell lunar LEDs. You could do that and run two separate timers. That would work just fine. I don't have a recommended vendor for the lunar lights because mine have always been integrated in the fixture. |
