Stand for a 40g breeder w/ 40g breeder sump?

Hey guys, I am looking to upgrade my current setup (40g breeder) to one with a sump and I would like to use another 40g breeder as the sump. Does anyone have a plan or template or simply a picture of their setup that could incorporate this? I can't seem to figure out how to safely build the stand to both hold the tank and be bale to fit the sump underneath. Thanks in advance!

You'd just need to build it larger by a good amount, and add additional support X bracing on the bottom and on the sides should spread the weight out to the legs which wont sit directly under it. then for the bottom part you can do standard size directly beneath it.

When you mean the bottom you mean the top of the stand correct? so just make x braces on the top and sides of the stand and it should be able to hold the weight?

2X4s and plywood, nothing fancy required. Make the stand based on my template but have it be 44". That would give you 37" between the legs which should be more than enough space for a 40B sump.

Good Luck.

You could build the whole thing out of 3/4" ply and it'd be plenty strong. It's easier, however, to build it from 2x4s and skin it in ply. You'll just have to have a little lip around the DT to accommodate the sump, which can look very nice. I build a very simple 2x4 frame, with the top frame resting on a 2x4 in each corner, which then rests on the bottom frame. There are a ton of demonstrations documented in stand build threads. You just have to adapt the measurements to the dimension you want and copy the concept. Some people will build a lot of cross braces and X braces between the vertical legs. I've found that a simple piece of plywood, screwed to the vertical runs and the top or bottom plates provide ample protection from wracking (side to side instability). Using 2x4 instead of all 3/4" ply makes building a little cheaper and easier, since you don't have to manhandle the plywood sheets. You can skin it with 1/4 or 1/2 inch and save some cash on nicer looking birch or oak ply.

I would use a combination of ply and 1x4s pocket screwed together.

Most of this can be made with a miter saw. Lumber yard can make the other handful of cuts.

If you have sketchup I can send you the file.

Sorry for the super late question, I know its basically reviving a long gone thread, but something came up so I had to putt my stand on hold. Anyways are you saying that I can basically follow your template exactly just make it a bit bigger to accommodate the sump? No extra bracing needed anywhere? Im just worried about having a full 40g breeder resting on top without it having the same support as a normal stand would. Thanks again!

I Am no expert but yes fallow Rockets plan its build like a tank ( pun intended) adding a few inches to include a 40br sump should be no deal. I fallowed his plan and made a stand for a 75 with 40br sump it prob. could hold another 75 on top.

Yex they do. Harbor Freight used to sell some really cheap clamps like the expensive Irwin clamps. They don't forever, but they'll last a couple of jobs. I got mine on sale and spent about $5 for each one. They're worth the Google search, at least
