No Rock Reef?

Hey everybody. I'm still trying to set up my 90 gallon SPS Reef. The project has been delayed for a few months now while I try to get the phosphates out of about 75 lbs of a mix of bleached & acid bathed old live rock and new figi dry rock from BRS. I'm using LC in a tub but the levels just don't seem to be falling. I can drive it to 0 with the LC but the levels return to over .1 ppm within a week when it is not being used.

So, since I don't want to use live rock... does anyone know of a non-rock aquascaping method? I'm leaving the question very broad on purpose. I'd like to hear and see anything people have done to eliminate the problems associated with rock in a reef tank.

Thanks

Are you talking about making your own aquascape using concrete,etc..? or just something totally different..

Totally different... ceramic, acrylic, plastic, etc.. Just to establish something to attach corals. No worry about substrate for biological activity... Super open aquascape... etc.

You could make some structures out of egg crate and zip ties, then let the coral encrust over them.

I believe there are several folks on this board who have used foam in their tanks.

foam? thats a generic term...
polyurethane? polyethylene? polystyrene?

Most use "eggcrate" as its easy to cut/break and can be zip-tied together to form all sorts of flat shapes/boxes,etc...

Egg crate, zip ties and black pond foam. You can paint the pond foam white with Krylon Fusion if you want.

I created a "false wall" that reached from the bottom of the tank to the top of a 110gal H (30 inches) and was only 4 inches thick at the most. I used a steak knife to trim the foam after it had cured.
