Arnar:

Yet another post stating what you already know: phenomenal project, well planned and executed. While I too cannot wait to see that bad boy filled, I am happy to see that you are resisting the pressure to prematurely move forward. Please do keep up updated.

Steve

Arnar, Searching the world's forums and various search engines, books ect, looking for the unique and new ideas and here is one of the jewels in the making, as an engineer in the middle of a unique tank setup i appreciate what you have achieved to date
regards my only qury is the type of glass or mix used. Toughened tempered/laminated, or tough lam mix with plain. i got the sizes from the forums many posts and pictures but not this thou,

I saw a glass cutting circular saw usually only works on plain/lam glass hence a possible mix of types? Greg in Australia

u can get 800 dollar glass cutting angle grinders and 1500 dollars glass drill presses.

Tempered shatters there is no way to cut it(from my understanding). they mainly use high quality austrlian glass for tempering.

btw arnar what this floating glass technique and what thickness glass is your tank.

I asked my fish tank supplier for specifics about the glass in the tank and he told me that they harden it after they cut it.

So from what I understand it's tempered floatglass. Sorry but I am not a specialist with glass and glass techniques which is why I got some german specialist/Deltec to take care of the actual tank build.

Here are some more pictures from today.

Connecting the electricity

This would probably be enough for 3 apartments

Wohoo... some water at last. Watertesting the sump

Water flowing in the skimmer.

Got the sink on the wall today. The taps need to be moved a little though.

My good friend Pete who is helping me with various things shows me how to use the glue.

you are going to want a bigger sink. I put in a decent utility sink but find that my reactors etc. do not fit well into it. When I remodel my tank room, I will go with an extra extra large sink.

Like I said I am no glass expert so what I've been told by my lfs might be BS. I called them today and asked him about the glass since I had questions about it here and this is what he told me.

Wiki entry on hardened glass

"Toughened glass is made from annealed glass via a thermal tempering process. The glass is placed onto a roller table, taking it through a furnace that heats it to above its annealing point of about 600 °C. The glass is then rapidly cooled with forced drafts of air while the inner portion of the glass remains free to flow for a short time.

An alternative chemical process involves forcing a surface layer of glass at least 0.1mm thick into compression by ion exchange of the sodium ions in the glass surface with the 30% larger potassium ions, by immersion of the glass into a bath of molten potassium nitrate. Chemical toughening results in increased toughness compared with thermal toughening, and can be applied to glass objects of complex shape."

Yeah. I was thinking the same thing and but this was the largest I could find at the time. The collection cup for the skimmer is not fitting very well in there but this sink is a good start and it's easy to add a bigger one later.

looks like you have the room. My cup won't fit in mine either so I end up with water and crap all over myself.

The tempered glass can only be cut before it is blasted with the cold air to actually "temper" it. If you tried to cut it after the tempering process than it would shatter. The easier way to make it though would be to make the panes and not have to cut them....but I dont know what they do..

FWIW, "float glass" is nothing fancy....It's just the process wby which the glass is made...they "float" molten glass on top of molten tin. The tin has a lower melting point than the glass, and has a lower weight...so the glass floats, and remains liguid long enough to cool into a piece with even thickness.

We have been working hard on the plumbing and getting things ready for filling the thing up. We will start with freshwater to test various things and if everything is looking good I will continue with the light fixtures and then add sand and start the rockscape.

I'll post more pictures this week. My 'other' work has been in the way recently since we have big expansion just released for our game

WOW!

Arnar this is just crazy!
The next travel goes north

There is some private 3000liter tanks here in Norway, but you could use a 3000l as sump

Great tread with lots of updates!
Good luck with the rest of the setup!

And we have water going in the tank !

Today we finally got to the point of putting water into the main tank. Did not have time today to fill it but I will continue tomorrow and then see how the circulation works out.
