I'm sorry that the Marine Pure didn't work for you. Ten months is more than enough time to get established. I'm not sure what happened, but it might be possible in theory that the anaerobic microbes couldn't get enough energy input or lacked some nutrient.

I just had an interesting conversations with the online chat rep at Bulk Reef Supply about the ceramic block. He said they did have a problem with "earlier batches" regarding reports of aluminum leaching from the blocks. But that the new batches are "greatly improved." This thread is about three years old. I came across it searching for information about the aluminum leaching because I was considering the ceramic blocks in my sump. I was wondering if anyone had any new news about this or new experiences?

Maxspect Nano-Tech Bio-Media stuff looks much better. I recently switched to Seachem matrix.

I did.. Basically said it depends on the flow.
I am guessing he means if high flow you get just Aerobic bacteria. Low flow would cause some Anaerobic bacteria.

I could have done that too if I had noticed the name of the stuff in an earlier post sooner.

This marine pure and the Maxpect stuff is pretty porous so I have to think they do not do much for nitrate especially if it is really low flow. How much water is processed in low flow? most likely more efficient ways to remove nitrate. allot will also depend on the amount of bacteria or bio-films that build up over time. That oxygen needs to be used up..

I might have posted early on in this thread, years ago, when I started using the blocks, but I thought I'd provide just another anecdote on the use of these blocks.
I pulled the block out of my biocube about 8 months into having there, and never really noticed a difference. I moved a few weeks ago, and siphoned out my sand bed since it was filled with detritus. Big mistake. I got a nutrient swing, full on ammonia blast, and everything died. With moderate flow, lights on, and the skimmer on full churn, I couldn't get the ammonia to come down. When I used prime, it just turned the API kit deep blue instead of deep green, suggesting that there was still plenty of ammonia. Almost 3 weeks and it never converted to nitrate or came down. I realized I had the marinepure blocks in storage, and since I was still in desperation mode, though had accepted that I've lost almost everything, I figured I'd try the blocks out, at worst they'd just sit there and ammonia would continue processing incredibly slowly. Within 24 hours of putting the block in my tank, the ammonia went from deep blue to light yellow haze again. So clearly when placed in a tank full of ammonia, and with moderate flow, it reduces ammonia very quickly. Too little to late to help my corals, but it was an interesting experiment out of desperation. I've been testing daily since adding the block, and never saw any more ammonia, and interestingly never saw much of a nitrate increase either. Nitrate went to 10-15ppm, light orange color on API, and stayed if not reduced. I suspect rarely does this natural experiment come up and someone have a marinepure block on hand to try it, but just as one more anecdotal test, it worked very quickly and effectively for me, even when prime wasn't doing the trick. I just wish I would have left them in the tank so that I could have moved the tank with the blocks still in, and the block probably would have saved my tank (yes, I realize I could have NOT ruined the sand bed, or could have used a sponge or filter floss as media to keep bacteria busy, but I didn't). |

Well, I'm sorry to hear about your problems, but it's interesting that the block might be very good at reducing ammonia.
The API kit will undo the ammonia binding that the Prime performs, I think. As part of the test, the reagents raise the pH, which I think is what does the unbinding. To see how much ammonia is bound vs unbound, you would need to use a kit like the SeaChem, which is designed to handle such situations.
