Sean...since you are here.
Can I just rinse the rock in some RO/DI and put it back into saltwater in the tub for a few more days before the next rinse? I have washed them a couple times now and the water is getting pretty clear. I figure the r/o shouldnt hurt to much, the rocks are out of the water maybe 2 minutes and in fresh water. I do my water changes weekly but could speed up the washing by doing fresh water washing a couple times a week. |

You are referring to the "dunking and swishing" stage when you say "washing" right?
If so, tbh, the only detrimental effect I can think of would be the killing off of certain beneficial organisms. Bacteria are no big deal as they multiply rapidly...so long as there is something to multiply. Pods and sponges would be decimated, as well as any stars, snails, chitons, various worms etc. hth, Sean

question, i have a 220 BB tank that is softy and lps. i think i have a bit too much debris on the bottom of my tank. i know the advantage of BB is keeping stuff suspended in the water column to get skimmed. i have 2 holes drilled in the tank w 1.5 inch bulkheads in them not sure if they are enough to get the dirty water to the skimmer.
so im looking for pump placement help. i have a tunze 6100 and a 6105, like i said tho its softy and lps so i have some stuff on the bottom of the tank that might not want to take the beating of intense water flow down there. questions/comments thank you corey |

The thing about bare bottom tanks is that high flow is a must, to avoid laminar flow, everywhere. I had 4 no. tunze 6101's on my BB 240, plus the return pump..... and had a single overflow chamber in one corner...... no debri.... but it takes careful aquascaping and strategic placement of the power heads. Through reading various materials, I was led to believe that for softy tanks, a little bit of sand / debri / nutrients / etc. were not entire undesireable.....

Wow, talk about a blast from the past. I still think it much easier to keep a BB reef than one with sand.

My old 120 had sand
My new 180 in wall is bare bottom. It is my first bare bottom tank while I love being able to crank up the flow and still feel I need to change my flow a little bit to get more off the bottom I do like it so far which is about 6 months now. Do any of you with bare bottoms have coral growing on the bottom? |

![]() Truth is...whilst the sand is nice and all...I prefer a bare bottom tank for the nutrient control...and I was able to have crazy flow in my tank. You need to mess around with the pumps to ensure either that all the detritus is suspended and goes into the overflow, or position the pumps so that the detritus collects in a corner which is easily accessible and siphone out weekly or better twice weekly. |

I cant believe this thread was still kickin. Back in 2005 I had a 6" Sand bed and the tank was doing great but after 6 years the tank began to decline. I broke the tank down and kept the rock in two trash cans for 2 years! I setup a bare bottom 150 gallon and used the cooked rock. Tank looks great. Bare bottom much easier then DSB. Much better coral growth with BB. May not be best for everyone but much better for me.
