Please feel free to post any questions you may have on my thread. I would like to share as much information as I can with everyone, but if I don't know what I have left out, I will not know what information to add.

I will do my best to answer any of your questions.

Here are some of the stain colors I have been looking at from the Minwax website. To see the color swatches please visit This Color Page
, scroll down until you see four little red boxes, and select "colors".

Please let me know what you think would be a cool looking color!!

Your right, it will degrade after about 4-6 months. With good ventilation it will last longer. It doesn't hold up to the salty humid environment the best. It tends to lose it reflectivity over time. However, its so cheap you can just slap some new stuff on and its 99% reflective when new. Much better than just white paint, IMO, night and day difference.

Reeferhead, Whoa! Mylar?! Really?! Did you use that to build solar sails for your spacecraft?! I guess if it's good enough for a NASA satellite, I could consider it for my reef.

My biggest worry about Mylar (or white paint) in the canopy is that most of the light will reflect back onto the lights themselves, degrading the bulbs and/or creating excess heat in the canopy.

Homereef, See above. Without a specialized reflector of some sort, I'm having a hard time trying to justify the benefits of wrapping/painting the canopy.

jcjstl, Good call. I like those colors, they are pretty cool. So many choices!

Im Lon 2, How did you post the actual colors? Earlier I was trying to post the whole list of color swatches to no avail... If you can, would you post it here please?

I don't fully understand your question about "going for stain or color". I would like to see the grain?

rccub23, Tis' all good, message sent.

Could you maybe just dip the lights in the water? Then you wouldn't have to worry about any reflection.

I have never been so right but yet so wrong at the same time

"its 99% reflective when new."
Where does that 1% of light go ?

Logi, if I am understanding you right, you really should see the benifit of atleast sealing the canopy with some protective paint, making it white will add the benifit of reflecting light.

Bare wood does not hold up to salt creep.

I could. Aside from safety, it would detract from viewing the tank, and cause a heat issue due to the amount of lights.

Homereef, There is no doubt about protection. I will likely use a few coats of spar urethane or equivalent. The heat from the lighting alone is enough to damage the wood, let alone saltwater.

The benefit I am missing is using a reflective material in the shape of a box, and expecting it to reflect much light into the tank. Is this wrong?

Seal the canopy in white, then glue aluminum foil in it. Should be a cheap solution and will be reflective.

Would this help because the foil would be kinda "crinkley", directing light to the water?

I think so. You used an alternative method with the bulbs. Give it a try, you could always tear it out. LOL

Ok first off, Dude I've got all the answers for ya. But I need that car.......The one in your Avidtar, yea that's it look to your left you see it.....right there under your SN (screen name) yep I need that car & in return I give you all the answer's

Ok if need be dude I can "loan" you some purple, Redish with a hint of blue sticky stuff. After ahhhh, useing it?? You can open your mind up to see the benefit of using a refective material in the shape of a box. Once you use the "loaner" product of mine you'll relize that light will reflect in any dirrection that is possiable. It bounces, bends, swings, curves and flips. So in a box it will reflect. If light hits the color white, it bounces back........I'm hungry & thristy I got go

I'll tell you what... I'll give you my Avatar if you can tell me what car it is. Really, I will. If you really want it, I will answer three questions about it. Then you tell me what it is. After that... maybe you can have it, maybe not.

Teasing me again with the sweet sticky iky iky oooowweeeee. My P.O. would just love to kick my a** next wed. for that idea.

"It bounces, bends, swings, curves and flips. So in a box it will reflect. If light hits the color white, it bounces back"

OK, but won't most of the light bounce, bend, swing, curve, and do kickflips right back at the bulbs?

Interesting Build.

I use one of those Blue Party Bulbs PC's as a moonlight on my 20L. I am curious to see how that lighting setup turns out for you.
