Some more info..
For Sand I used 20lbs of dry sand, 40lbs of live sand, 20lbs of aragonite, and 6 solo cups of sand from my 2 1/2 month old propagation tank. So my sand bed is about 3 1/2" deep. |

LOL, not really, mine makes noise as well but the canopy and my 4 kids help to lessen the sound of the tank! I did make a cover for the overflow that reduced the noise from the water falling in the overflow. This is my first RR tank so I am new to this as well. I suggest that you experiment with the air hole in the durso. Mine whistles as well. More the smaller the hole. I am having a hard time stabilizing the level of water in the overflow. I have to make an adjustment every week it seems like. Let me know if you find a solution.
I may need some guidance with a stand in the near future as well. Let me know when you have Chris (checkinhawk) taken care of and I may pick your brain. |

I would try and drill a bigger hole on the drain pipe, but then again I never tried it on the mega flow kit. But on a side note, if you do damage it you can alway make your own drain, with that stand and canopy you built you shouldnt have a problem making a durso...

I've always had problems with the AGA's durso, I think it has something to do with the holes in the side of the pipe, it seems to prevent you from adjusting it correctly.
Tom from SITC came over to my house the other day to help me out and he had a great idea. We made our own durso's and drilled a 3/8" hole in the top of the cap, then screwed in a threaded 3/8" x 1/4" JG ball valve to the top. This allows you to adjust the amount of air without the problem of drilling/redrilling etc... You can also attach a piece of RO tubing to the top and run it a little ways to eliminate the whistle from the incoming air. On my setup I have the water level about a 1/2" below the teeth on the overflow and used the ball valve to get it to that level. It's almost completely quite now and have had no issues what so ever. Let me know if you need pics... Chris |

This is on my 120, and I'm using a Reeflo Barracuda, so I'm sure if you were using a smaller pump you could get it virtually silent.

Guys update- I made a really overflow and went with a DIY durso. It was suggested to me from a fellow reefer. It is silent now and has been since Tuesday. Dont buy the store bought overflows, especially the Mega Flow series. If anyone wants mine they can have it.

Love your craftsmanship chrismhaase very very nice work. I was going to say "Durso" but you had already purchased the other. Glad you decided to DIY them. I'm going with the DIY Durso also on my 280 (2 of them) and save myself something like 120 bucks or so. I might have to have a DIY party for the Durso's - for anyone that's isn't sure about building them.
Everything is looking great - we will have to get together on my 280+ build, you have some great talent. |

Exactly. Cheap alternative to the expensive store bought versions and they work better too!

I love it, it is a great skimmer. I went on this skimmer because of the known reputation, they are sold here locally at FAIOS, and John had good reviews and things to say about the brand and performance. I think his tanks speak to his choice in equipment. I will post a pic of the skimmer in action, just give me a few.

ER 180 just started
Here is a pic of the ER 180 after I made my final adjustment. I didn't realize I could get more air bubbles when I turned back the ball valve on the air intake. Plus it is new so it is going through the adjustment period. This is it working after my last adjustment from last night at 9PM. Looks like it is working!
