...it appears RC was down. I just wanted to explain that this was on purpose. You see, I didn't want anyone catching up with my post count, so I unplugged the modem until I got back.

Pictures from my trip to follow.

Rochester N.Y. is in the upper section of the state. There is a lot of farm country for miles and miles, which was very beautiful. Rochester gets a lot of snow being on the east coast, but this is their spring time. URSNY asked me to come speak to their club, and as we drove Saturday morning to Batavia I snapped a few pictures.

This is a house that belongs to KentE. He has a 400g plywood tank currently, and is building a new one that holds 900 to 1000g in his basement.

His tank looks like a toolbox or lunchbox, depending on your perspective. When you open the doors at the top, you can see his Luminarc reflectors that roll back and forth on a light mover. His tank only has two MH bulbs over it.

http://www.melevsreef.com/pics/07/05/ny/light_mover.jpg

Because his focus is upon the new tank currently under contruction, the current tank is not nearly what it could have been. He's planning on cooking all his liverock and setting up the new one with as few pest problems as possible. By starting over, he hopes to enjoy a nice reef again. This time he'll go back to a DSB over a barebottom system. He's got many frags growing in the sump (in the previous post), and an Imperator angelfish swims beneath.

A couple of pictures from the 400g.

This is the new tank, which is going to hold between 900 and 1000g. It is 5.5' wide, 9' long, and 30' tall. It's being made of birch plywood and then coated with a resin that can handle up to 1600PSI. I think it'll look amazing when done.

http://www.melevsreef.com/pics/07/05/ny/1000g2.jpg

His son crawled underneath, inside the stand. There are no central uprights because of a hump in the concrete foundation. It looks plenty strong to me.
http://www.melevsreef.com/pics/07/05/ny/1000g3.jpg

The inside joints are all lined with an angled board to reinforce the 90 degree connections. His last tank was built the same way.

Here is another tank that has been built and has the resin already completed. It is super shiny, and is a black background. It feels hard to the touch, and very smooth.

Having already had breakfast, it was time to drive to Batavia where the meeting was to be held. I had two presentations prepared, and between those a frag swap would occur.

Check out the raffle prizes! :eek2:

I checked the weather before packing and it was supposed to be 65F in the daytime, 35F at night. Figuring I'd be indoors I packed tshirts and a pair of jeans. A pullover would have been a smart move on my part. Oops. Friday night when I arrived it was pretty cool, but I survived. Saturday morning, the sky was clear, bright blue and sunny - the perfect day. Sunday morning it was cold, overcast and rainy. Not quite what I would think of as spring.

Here's another shot of the landscape.
http://www.melevsreef.com/pics/07/05/ny/landscape.jpg

And of a Douglas Fir tree. They were everywhere, and one of my favorite kinds of trees. I grew up in California, hiked a lot and saw many pine trees. The same when I lived in Switzerland. It was easy to feel comfortable around so much greenery.

I gave two presentations. The first one was about sumps. The second one was about how to build one with acrylic. Since I did the presenting, and really what would be the point of a picture of a guy standing by a powerpoint slide, we'll just move on to the frag swap pictures.

I have to say I loved these little frag-holding tanks.

Each were lighted with these PC light fixtures.
http://www.melevsreef.com/pics/07/05/ny/frag_tank3.jpg

A small powerhead maintained circulation and a heater was under the rack.
http://www.melevsreef.com/pics/07/05/ny/frag_tank4.jpg

Another tank contained frags and even a clam!
http://www.melevsreef.com/pics/07/05/ny/frag_tank5.jpg

Frags were brought in a bucket that had levels of eggcrate so that they could be stacked. A bucket held many frags. You can see them stacked in the third picture of this post.
http://www.melevsreef.com/pics/07/05/ny/bucket_o_frags.jpg

Some were bagged up, already sold.
http://www.melevsreef.com/pics/07/05/ny/frags_bagged.jpg

Glue was for sale as well. (Cyanoacrylate)

Here are some shots of the frags.

http://www.melevsreef.com/pics/07/05/ny/frags5.jpg

http://www.melevsreef.com/pics/07/05/ny/frags6.jpg

What really impressed me was that these were all what I would consider unusual or rare corals, the kind you normally don't see at frag swaps. And this makes them more expensive. The more I looked in the tank, the more I realized I wanted. Since you can't carry on liquid on the plane, I resisted the urge to buy any. Until I saw this one.
http://www.melevsreef.com/pics/07/05/ny/sunset_monti.jpg

I bought it, and 7 hours later we finally put it in Scott's tank. The next morning, we bagged it up along with a couple of other pieces from his system, sealed them in a plastic container, placed this in a large ziplock bag, and then wrapped my clothes around it to try to insulate it from the cold. It was within my suitcase for the trip home, and then acclimated late last night to my system. I hope it survives. It is called a Sunset Montipora, one I'd seen in Naka's tank earlier this year.

After the event was over, I decided that we had to go look up Gary Majchrzak, another Team RC member. We were looking forward to meeting at the event, but he was unable to attend. Btw, I did meet Guy, another TRC member. With all of us together, is it any wonder RC was down? ;)

Gary's tank was already shutting down for the night as we got there kind of late, so I only have a couple of shots.

This is his auto-feeder. It drops in food every 12 hours to keep the anthias fed. The food falls into the funnel, down the pipe and into the return section where it is pulled into an Iwaki pump and sent up to the display. He blames this system for his Texas-sized aiptasia. ;)

What a huge assortment of goodies! I doubt I'd be able to walk out of that place with any money left in my pockets. Like you said, it looked like there were so many corals that you don't see around here very often, if at all.

Once we left, we got something to eat and some

Sunday morning I was up at the crack of 7:30am so we could head up to the Seneca Zoo. The URSNY maintain a reef tank there, and have been doing so since 2002. David Playfair (a former RC regular that had many followers) was one of the guys that got this project going.
http://www.melevsreef.com/pics/07/05/ny/seneca_zoo.jpg

Members of the club can make any corrections to what I'm about to describe, but as far as I recall it is a 540g reeftank made of glass. It is installed in a large room that has huge windows to view polar bears on the left and sea lions to the right.

Each Sunday, one or more members go to work on the tank. On the ladder is Guy, the Team RC member I mentioned before.
http://melevsreef.com/pics/07/05/ny/zootank_cleaning.jpg

Because it was relatively early, the actinics were on and taking pictures of fish is nearly impossible with my camera. I tried a few settings, and here are some of the better images. You'll notice the Sohal Tang in many of these pictures because I was hoping to get a good picture somehow.

I had to resort to the flash. That Sohal Tang is just stunning, under actinics as well as under full lighting. It had to be 14" long, easily 1" thick, and ruled that tank. Its scalpel was over 1" long. Is it any surprise this is the RC logo fish? I may photoshop about 7 of them into my reef to get past this craving. :D

Here are some closeups under actinics, and also under MH lighting when they finally kicked on after waiting a while.

Lobophytum
http://melevsreef.com/pics/07/05/ny/zootank_lobo.jpg

I asked about the maintenance. They'd changed 40g that day, and the zoo feeds the tank each day. They have specific rules, such as you can't kill anything in the tank. So aiptasia can't be nuked, and flatworms get to thrive. Kind of crazy, but the signed contract requires that they follow the guidelines. In front of the tank are two permanent binders that have heavily-laminated pages about each animal or coral in the tank.

The sump beneath uses Miracle Mud. The skimmer (not pictured) is a My Reef Creations, running externally at the end of the tank. The Aqua Controller II helps track tank parameters.

Turns out the problem with RC was do to the local TW node. Apparently anyone with roadrunner in Western NY couldn't connect.

Problems solved now.

I will have to get some pics of you giving your presentation up too.

Great pics, Marc. I was in upstate NY for 6 years for college and assorted stuff afterwards so I'm having a nice memory trip (or is it flashbacks?) :D That Sohal tang is gorgeous and that frag swap is sweet!! I would have thought that Gary's tank would have more anemones in it?? Congrats on the new sunset monti - hope it acclimates well to your tank. Was that a pokerstar monti to the right of the pic of your sunset monti?

(edit: nevermind - I just figured out that that coral was the same coral pictured in your rainbow monti picture ...)

Than you Peter. Before this trip and my time spent on Google Maps, I didn't realize how large the state of New York was. So much attention goes to Manhattan & Long Island (imho) that I didn't think it was so far from one area to the next. There were a number of people that I would have enjoyed meeting in person that were hours and hours away from each other.

One person drove 5 hours to that meeting & frag swap. He was up by the Canadian border. Mo drove 4 hours and when I mentioned someone drove 5, he told me he'd drive back slower so he could make it 6 hours.

Hi Marc,

Indeed NYS is surprisingly large with huge forest preserve spanning from the Catskills Park across the Adirondak preserves. On the eastern border it tags Connecticut, Massachusetts & Vermont. Since Long Island is surrounded by sea it makes for a very interesting collection experience around their various seashores. I've heard in some areas there you can catch lion fishes among other summer migratory species from south.

Gary, please let your wife know that I appreciated her kind hospitality and that in the future she'll have more notice. Thanks for showing me your tank and spending some time with me Saturday evening.

acdraindrps, I'm probably not explaining myself adequately. At most frag swaps, and I've been to many of them over the years, there are many regular items. Usually the cool stuff would come in as a special purchase for the club's raffle. One or two individuals would bring a bunch of unique stuff, but these two little tanks were crammed with goodies that I would not have expected. I mean, I could get any one of those corals from Extreme Corals (as they are local to DFWMAS). Maybe you are spoiled! I would have spent some serious cash had I been a local.

Wow great post.... I live in Rochester and I am very sad that something like this took place and I didn't have a chance to attend. None the less I am glad to see that things like this can/do happen in Rochester! Is there someplace I can get more info about URSNY?

If I am correct on the dates you visited you were in town during the Lilac Festival... an annual Rochester tradition. Obviously you were busy with a lot of things to do but I bet you would have enjoyed stopping by that for a bit. It's quite a sight... all the lilac trees in bloom.

Anyway glad you enjoyed your visit!

Wonderful pics!

I was curious. You said the plywood for the home-built tank was coated to strengthen it and make it waterproof. I was wondering if you knew what the name of the stuff was.

I heard about it from several people, but didn't get to see it. I did visit one of the supermarkets that I was told was amazing and it reminded me of Central Market, a place that should not be missed.

Supporting the local club by participating in each scheduled event is so much fun and benefits you and your tank greatly. I hope you find the time to get involved with them.

I saw it described in the official thread about that tank. The initials were MAS, if I recall correctly.
