Easy question, I want to upgrade from my AC3 to the Apex but I'm running 4 DC8's and one HD DC4 and dont want to buy new EB's.

Are my DC8's compatible with the Apex?

Yes. If you read the product description, Apex is backwards compatible with DC8/DC4/DC4HD, Breakout box and I believe PX1000.

But, the new EB8 and PM modules are not backwards compatible with AC Jr. or ACIII.

Yes - but I highly recommend that you get at least one EB8, mainly because the normal power source for the Apex is a EB8. Having an EB8 will also allow you to make use of the Fallback function for critical devices.

What is the fallback func and how does it work?

You can decide by outlet whether you want that outlet ON (Fallback ON) or OFF (Fallback OFF) in the event the controller goes down or is unreachable for some reason. Much better than a dumb power strip for devices like a dosing pump where you don't want it running unattended or a heater where you do.
