View Full Version : Dosing pump failsafe?

I've hooked up two BRS dosing pumps to outlets #4 and #8 on my apex (the relay outlets).
I've heard a few horror stories about apex controller outlets failing and getting stuck 'on' (even the relay outlets) and was wondering if there was a way to set up some kind of failsafe for the dosing pump? Maybe even for the entire apex to fallback to off? I'm not sure how possible, or necessary, this is. I just like to take as many precautions as I can :)

If you have a pH probe or even a ORP probe then maybe you can have the outlet monitor that information. I would also recommend the Fallback Off
Program Example:
If pH > 8.35 Then OFF

If the outlet fails due to the contacts being stuck together, there's no failsafe in the world that will help you turn that outlet off. Best bet is to include a line in your alarm outlet that will turn on if the pH goes above a certain point. At least you'll get some warning that something isn't right.
I haven't heard the horror stories you have, and have had my dosing pumps running on the mechanical relay outlets going on 4 years straight now with absolutely no issues.

if you have a spare relay outlet, a normally closed 120v solenoid on a separate outlet would work as a failsafe. Since you have 2 BRS dosers, I am assuming you don't but an EB4 would do the trick. That said, in 5 or so years of owning my Apex and having my relay outlets turn on and off multiple times a day, i have yet to have an outlet failure on any one of my 5 EB8's.

+1 Going on 4 Years here on and off multiple times per day with no issues.
