achilles tang

are they as hard to take care of as i hear? awesome looking fish. anyone out there have one?

They are a delicate fish.
They need a big tank with strong current, heavily oxygenated water and many feedings a day.

Beautiful yes.
But, imo, not a fish for captivity.

that's ok, i was just wondering. i think the whitecheek tang looks just as good. i might have to get me one.

white cheecks are just as delicate. Achilles are tough to keep. They require as mentioned highly oxygenated water, they come from surge zones. Also the point I cant stress enough is this fish needs to be prestine from the get go. A healthy specimen is probably the biggest key.

I have one. He is a great fish that I feel is hardy in an established tank with algae in it. The love to pick all day long. They are one of my favorite fish. Too bad I can't put it with my powder blue. That would be a fight to the death. I would get one if I were you. Good luck.

hmm most of the popular fish-vendors online seem to advertise that the powder brown (japonicus) is one of the better acanthurus...which doesn't mean it's a damsel or a trigger, but it should be fine.

Again with tangs, if you get a pristine specimen from the get-go it'll work good!

the powder brown is hardier, the whitecheek isn't. they are 2 different fish. after research, i may pass up a tang and go with an angel.

IMO white cheeks are pretty hardy, there behavior reminds me alot of Powderblues in there swimming patterns, so u need a little extra length to ur tank

My achilles tang is in a 120 long. He lives with a blue thoat trigger and a grey angel. I have in a 125, a powder blue, large orange shoulder, large sailfin, naso and hippo tang. All of them get along well. I leave algae grow on the back of the tank and they pick all day with multiple feedings of a varied diet.
