Coral Restoration Foundation meets FMAS
Please review this post carefully. For those of you that have never heard of the Coral Restoration Foundation (CRF), they are a non-profit organization in the Florida Keys dedicated to restoring the corals decimated in the Florida Keys. Their efforts have been published in Coral Magazine and many other recognized journals.
Our society, the Florida Marine Aquarium Society (FMAS), had the great pleasure of going scuba diving on this wonderful site this weekend. CRF and their founder Ken Nedymier are doing a wonderful job in the Florida Keys using aquarist techniques to restore the coral population in Florida. CRF recently obtained a grant from the government for their work, but much help is needed from the general public. What better public than those of us that love our coral reefs. Our experience in coral maintenance is of utmost importance to foundations such as this. We have to realize that we outnumber the scientists committed to the preservation and survival of coral reefs, and we do it in our living rooms. We (FMAS) ask that all other local societies, and available individuals, get involved in this very important task. We at FMAS are very lucky to be a few hours drive from Ken’s “nursery” but ask that all that have the opportunity to visit the keys join in the effort. There are many societies throughout the country that would benefit from a trip of such important magnitude. It gives you an opportunity to not only help in preservation, but have a great time doing so. Below are links to CRF’s website, and also to OUR recent post here on RC with pics of the work, and fun we had doing it!!!!! We had local media document our trip and we were joined by many well-known guests in the aquarium hobby. FMAS can help your clubs with contacts within CRF, local details, scuba companies (including certifications, and/or proper training), etc….
