Neo Therm heater exploded

I noticed a horrible burning smell in the middle of the night yesterday, and this morning, I found two of my fish dead. Turns out, the problem was my 150W neo therm heater that had exploded and released that smell and toxin into the tank; there was a huge crack down the middle of it. I did some research, and this plastic heater exploding had happened to many people. I have already moved the surviving fish into another tank, and I have replaced the water fully and trashed the heater. I don't know if this was a heater that I had just bought a few months ago, or one that I received from a seller that could have been much older; I had mixed them up. Firstly, the smell is still there, and it is unbearable. Is there any way to clear it out besides opening all the doors and windows, like vinegar or something? Second, is there a way to identify some sort of model number on the heater to tell how old it is? Lastly, anyone has experience with filing a damage claim? TIA.
