Best Skimmer
What is the best skimmer for a 75 gal. tank with a decent bio-load?
It seems everyone has a different idea which the best is. |

I use an ASM G-3. It is a little overkill but i plan to beef up the bio-load in the tank in the near future. I pull out half a cup of nasty stuff a day, dry skimming.

I read that ASM are unreliable because they are hand made, some are good and some are not. Is that true? How does yours work?

I haven't heard any problems with ASM skimmers or I wouldn't have bought one. I personally like ASM skimmers but there are other great options.
MyReefCreations EuroReef (might as well get ASM) Deltec Trigger Systems Just to name a few. Mike

I don't think there is a difference of opinion here at all. The fact is the more you can afford the better skimmer you are gonna get.
I have a 75, and i use the AquaC Remora Pro with a souped up (mag 7) pump driving it. I've also moved it to the sump and converted it to work like an urchin. Of course, if I had 2 gees lying around, I'd get the deltec that has the automatically cleaning brushes for the collection tube. Would it make a huge difference? Maybe not, but there is no question that the skimmer is all important, and price does matter. |

It took a week to break it in but once i did it was one of the best skimmers i have ever owned. (not that i owned many before it)

You are going to get a ton of different answers to your question. A lot of what makes a skimmer the right choice is dependent upon what you are looking for in it.
What is the budget? Size constraints? Is noise a big concern?

I run a ASM g3 and it works great. There are lots of good ones out there for sure.

I would aim for a 6inch by 24 inch skimmer. the g-3 is a good option. the Euroreef new rs series will be the same thing but a little better and better build quality. the octopus skimmers are nice- slight decrease in performance(which I haven't seen) but killer price. I have owned all three and so far I like the er and octopus best. Deltects are great skimmers a little better than the ones above but double the price. H+s will be the top along with bubbleking. Beckett skimmers will be overkill on a small tank imo but they work good if kept clean.
Summary any needlewheel 6inch tube that is 24 inches or so will be what you want. all listed above will skim as good as needed and a little better.

My g3 took one day to start pulling out nasty crud. Thats was without even washing it, right out of the box. It has not stopped skimming at all, water changes , feeding, works great for me.
