CREE PAR38s?

Hi all,

I want to replace my refugium light with something brighter. Right now I have a 19 watt fluorescent PAR38 bulb, but I want to try one of those snazzy CREE LED ones. They seem to be available in a variety of wattages. The biggest I found was a 36 watt bulb. Would this thing be overkill? It's almost $100, so maybe I should try something smaller. Does anyone have a good guide for comparing the output from the LED and fluorescent bulbs?

TIA,
Alex

Cool

do you have any links to the bulb in question because i know of only a few companies that use CREE's in their PAR38 bulbs

Here is one on ebay that I was thinking about, but it seems to use a good bit of juice. It uses three times what is typical wattage, but only about double the lumens. I might try two 12 watt lamps from someone else instead...

It does not say what CREE led they are using. LEDs and fluorescent seem to put out the same visible light per watt (according to an LED webinar I saw). However the LED will probably be more focused.

So do you want/need more light than you have now? I think that is what you need to decide.
