RO/DI setup & Water Storage

Ok...I have had my RO/DI for a year and it's all I have had. I didn't even have it set up all the time, but when I did have it setup I just ran it from my spicket to whatever I needed filled. So I think it's time to upgrade it to a little more efficient setup.

My outdoor spicket is behind the house. My tank is on the left side of the house towards the front next to a double glass door to the outside. It is quite a distance. I want to build a small shed with three 55gal drums, 2 for salt water and one for RO/DI. (see diagram below..not to scale)

The plan is to run a line from the spicket to the side of the house where I will have the shed with my saltwater-RO/DI at and mount the unit in the shed with a booster pump. I live on Okinawa and I live in a semi-remote area, so I don't have pressurized city water. I have a tank on top of my house that is fed by gravity to an external pump which gives about 58 PSI of pressure when activated.

Now, since I live on an island...a very small island, access to fresh salt water is easy and delivery of it is cheap (100g for about $50). I will have salt water delivered to the house to fill the barrels, but I still want to store RO/DI for top-off and in the event of a typhoon or if I need more salt water right now.

I plan to have the RO/DI water fill a black 55g drum (black to prevent any sunlight) with a float switch to auto-fill it as needed. I will also be changing from my little hand TDS meter to an in-line TDS meter but need input on how to set it up. I was thinking pre-RO unit, post-sediment and post DI. Any input on this would be appreciated.

Also, how long can I store RO/DI? I know I am not going to go through 50 gallons of it quickly, so how long would I be able to keep it as long as I kept it moving with a pump?

Eventually, I will plumb all of this into the house for auto-top off and auto water changes from the shed, but right now I just need to focus on the water station.

Thanks for any help provided!

check out air/water/ice for a RO/DI unit etc. They have some great units for a lower price point than many others

Do you have to store the RO water or can you make what you need as you go along?
