Question regarding salinity and cycling
This may seem like a silly question, but I am in the process of setting up my third tank and I am curious.
What would be better? 1. Removing water and adding fresh water to lower the salinity? or 2. Let the tank cycle at the salinity it is at and then remove water after the cycle has finished. This is my first time setting up a tank and adding salt to the tank after the RO water is in it. Normally I mix the water before hand but that wasn't really an option this time. The salinity is at 1.26-1.27 I have already tried adding water to the system but if I add any more water the baffle chambers in my sump will be pointless. Thanks guys! Conrad |

1.026 is right where you want to be. If it is just a shade over that then i would probably just live with it and deal with it on the first water change.

Adding salt directly into the DT cannot be 'not an option'...

I usually keep my tanks at 1.025 not 1.026. Sorry I left out the "0" in my last post. Didn't mean to. lol
I suppose acclimating my fish and coral from my old tank to 1.026 isn't the worst thing in the world and the higher the salinity will just mean more of the good stuff from my salt mix. Kind of confused by what you are saying man lol. Please elaborate a little more. |

You should never add salt directly into your DT. It should always be mixed first then added...

Adding salt to the Dt during initial fill up is perfectly fine.
